4starting the course
Follow these simple steps to get started on Touch Typing NoW!
Start your computer.
Place the Touch Typing NoW! CD-ROM in the computer’s CD-ROM or DVD drive.
NB: If this is the first time you have used Touch Typing NoW! and the program has not already been installed on your computer we recommend you follow the instructions given in Software Installation on page10 before continuing.
The program should start automatically. If your machine is not configured for this, click Start\Programs\NikaSoft\Touch Typing NoW!. The Touch Typing NoW! Welcome screen will then load.
Enter your
name (or an alias) where it says User1. Click the
ok button
or
press the Enter key. This will ensure that your progress is monitored
and recorded and that your results are not mixed up with those of other users.
This also makes you the default user. See the User Profiles section on
pages 20-21 if you want other people to use the course.
When your on screen teacher’s welcome introduction is over, run your mouse cursor over the buttons to the right of your teacher’s video screen to familiarise yourself with their functions. A full description of the controls and each button’s purpose is given under Overview of the Main Screen, starting on page 16 of this manual.
Tip: If you forget what a button is for, position your mouse cursor over the relevant button, but do not click on it. A description of the button’s function will appear beside it.
To begin
the course, click on the
lesson button
.
When the Lesson Selection menu appears, click on No. 1. Your
teacher will then explain what to do. If for any reason you are unsure where
the button is, don’t worry, your teacher will prompt you and the button will
highlight after a few moments.
Finger positioning. Note the position of the fingers of the shadow hands on the on-screen keyboard. With your fingers in the start-up position, the index finger of your left hand rests on the F key (note the ridge on the key) with your other three fingers on the D, S and A keys respectively. The index finger of your right hand rests on the J key (also ridged), with your other three fingers on the K, L and colon keys respectively. In this “home” position, both thumbs fall naturally over the Space bar and either of them can be used to operate it. Shift keys, left and right, are operated by moving either of the little fingers sideways and pressing.
Follow your on screen teacher’s instructions through lesson 1 and on to the first test. If you complete test 1 successfully, lesson 2 will be offered automatically. If you make too many mistakes in the test, your teacher will recommend that you repeat the lesson. We recommend that you do so, too.
At any
stage you can stop what you are doing and leave the course by clicking on the
exit button
.
GOOD TYPING!
